Children, HIV, Asylum & Immigration

This meeting marks the launch of a Children & Young People HIV Network (National Children’s Bureau) report on the current situation for children living with HIV and insecure immigration status in the UK. This event will be an opportunity to hear from speakers with expertise in Children’s Welfare, Paediatric HIV Healthcare and Child Refugee issues. With speakers: Paul Ennals (Chief Executive, National Children’s Bureau), Dr Hermione Lyall (Chair of the Children HIV Association for the UK and Ireland), Lisa Nandy (Refugee Children’s Consortium) and Martin Narey (Chief Executive, Barnardo’s).

With speakers: Donna Price (a young person) on her experiences of being raised by a relative, Ann Tucker (a family and friends carer) on raising a child who cannot live with their parents, Roger Morgan (Children’s Rights Director) on promoting the well-being of children living with friends or relatives, and the policy implications of family and friends care, and Joan Hunt (Department of Social Policy and Social Work, University of Oxford) on research into family and friends care. An invited panel will contribute to discussion and debate, and will include: Parmjit Dhanda MP (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, DfES) (invited), Tim Loughton MP (Conservative Shadow Minister for Children), and Annette Brooke MP (Lib Dem Shadow Spokesperson for Children).
How Every Child Matters can deliver for disabled children and young people and their families

This meeting will be an opportunity to discuss: what the Every Child Matters outcomes framework means for disabled children and young people; how to make sure that the Government’s childcare strategy improves the quality and quantity of childcare for children and young people with a disability; how universal services such as extended schools and children’s centres can be made fully accessible to these children and young people; and how the principles of Early Support can be mainstreamed, and extended up the age range to all services for disabled children and young people. With speakers: Lord Adonis (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, DfES), and a member of the management board of the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign (www.edcm.org.uk)
Child Benefit from an international comparative perspective

The Officers of the APPGC have decided to dedicate one or two meetings of the Group to addressing international issues relating to children and young people, from a comparative perspective. This meeting will be an opportunity to explore child benefit, focusing on: how child benefit could make a significant contribution towards alleviating child poverty in developing countries; the political and operational challenges in addressing universal child benefit; and how this links to policy assumptions regarding entitlements for families in the UK. Attendees will be able to learn about and debate the rationale, principles and experiences associated with universal child benefit. Contributions from the speakers will be followed by questions and discussion.
