Child Benefit from an international comparative perspective

Monday 22 January 2007

The Officers of the APPGC have decided to dedicate one or two meetings of the Group to addressing international issues relating to children and young people, from a comparative perspective.  This meeting will be an opportunity to explore child benefit, focusing on: how child benefit could make a significant contribution towards alleviating child poverty in developing countries; the political and operational challenges in addressing universal child benefit; and how this links to policy assumptions regarding entitlements for families in the UK.  Attendees will be able to learn about and debate the rationale, principles and experiences associated with universal child benefit.  Contributions from the speakers will be followed by questions and discussion.  With speakers: Hilary Benn MP (Secretary of State for International Development) (invited), Ann McKechin MP, Armando Barrientos (Institute for Development Studies), Kate Green (Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group)
